The Harry Potter Suicide Hoax
Call it Harry Potter and the Tasteless Internet Joke.
Earlier today (July 14), the Huffington Post ran a story about a 32 year-old man named Jude Ralston who allegedly killed himself after learning the spoilers to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at "a mall." YES, IT WAS A FAKE ARTICLE (or, more accurately, a real article about fake things that never happened).
It didn't take Hedwig to smell a rat. Especially when the article contained ridiculous quotes such as these: "When Jude got that vanity license plate that said 'Hogwarts,' that seemed harmless enough," said Polly Clovis, who attended Model U.N. with Mr. Ralston while the two were in high school. "But when he started wearing that wizard hat around town, we really should have seen that as a cry for help."
"In my heart I believe that could have saved Jude's life, even if he didn't have one," she said.
Still, the story definitely fooled some people... even PEREZ HILTON, who reposted the item on his site, only to take it down moments later (click here and you'll get an error message, but if anyone has a screenshot of the Perez item, send it to gabe@4tnz.com).
Tsk, tsk. Don't you guys know? Voldemort works in mysterious ways.
